M2 Competition?

Previous incarnations of M2s had a competition option, which offered fancy aesthetics and such.

Will the G87 eliminate this option? From what I gather, the model launched is the whole enchilada, so speak. Well, until a CSL comes along, which I suppose, would be a combination platter.

The resident inside info forum member seems to think the Competition is a year+ after the base model launch. Maybe even not until the LCI.

But recent press drives, there was clearly a base manual G87 and comp auto G87.

We won't really have any concrete info until Oct.

Right on, thanks for the info. Will the 2024 model be some kind of mild hybrid, given the announcement that the 23 m2 will be the last petrol only M car?

Thanks.

i highly doubt any G8x gets mild hybrid in its remaining lifespan, that will be next generation (H series) cars

The recent M3, M4 & M5 all had the Comp appearing at the sane time as the base…it would be weird if it doesn’t happen to the up coming M2

I'm hoping the comp isn't auto only, but if it is, then it's a manual carbon roof carbon seats base car for me. Which is probably all I should do anyway.

This is highly possible to keep from currently stepping on the G80/82 toes.

We will know more in October but i am thinking they might skip the competion this round I think we will get a M2 at launch then CS with +20K bump in price and eventualy CSL with +40k over CS. There will also probably be a special modle at end of life M2 Heritage or something like that.

Though I also could see them doing the Comp out the door with different tune and carbon seats and a few othere small things. Or they might follow the same modle with the M3/M4 and Comp is IX + Tune + Auto and all modles about m2 base will the Auto and IX to manage power. Though since none of the Cars currentley have IX i dont think that is in the cards.

The next question is will either the cs or csl come in manual? I don't see the csl coming in manual but maybe the cs? A part of me wants to just be patient and hold out for it but only I know it's coming in a manual

Which would be odd as over the past couple of years there seems to have been a lot of R&D, time, money and effort spent in getting the M Sport, M Performance, M, M Competition, M CS and MS CSL hierarchy marketed.

I think they will follow m3/m4 if you want manual you will be limited to base. CS and CSL will be auto and IX if and when. If Comp is released at launch it might be spared but dont think that is likley and it will recieve IX and Auto.

I want Manual so base it is.

Well, sort of.
The M2 never had a Competition option, it was always a stand alone model replacing the original M2 (M2 - 2016 to 2018, M2 Competition 2019 to 2021). The main difference between the cars was not fancy aesthetics but an entirely different engine, brakes, some suspension tuning to make up for the weight difference, cooling, and yes, aesthetics like different bumper and mirrors. Oh and different seats. It was a completely different car.
The Competition package on the other hand was on other M cars like the M3/4 and up. However, it also brought different suspension tuning, wheels, exhaust, and a bump in power. It was never simply a aesthetic option like black paint around the headlights.

Will there be a stand alone Competition model? Will the model be available at the same time as the non-comp? Will it replace the standard car like the past? What about a Competition package?

That, we simply don't know and wont until probably October at the earliest. We do have insiders on this forum but there is only so much knowledge they have or are willing to share with the general public. I would say half the fun is waiting but we both know that's just not true. I want the full details and I want them now.

For those that think no Comp model is coming and it is straight to CS and/or CSL.

What about the AT pre-production car with the M-striped seatbelts(hard not to believe that was the Comp). It still had the black/white camo on, almost like BMW letting everyone know the Comp is coming after Base launch(which had the 50th anniversary wrap). This would follow what ynguldyn has said all a long. I feel like BMW puts the easiest clues out there and people try their hardest to ignore them.

December 2022 release is for M2 base.
M2 base will not have a Competition option.
A separate M2 Competition model is in the plans.
It is not coming at the same time as M2 base.
My estimate of the probability of M2 Comp trailing M2 base by a year or more - 95%.
My estimate of the probability of M2 Comp being an LCI model (early 2025) - 70%.

I have recently learned that the carbon bucket option on the base G80/82 adds the M seat belts in some markets. Canada apparently being one of them. Also keep in mind that the prototypes were specifically for the EU market as they were equipped with the particulate filters.

Just built M4 base on BMW.de. Adding carbon buckets does not add M-stripe seat belts.

But… it does on a Canadian base G80 as I mentioned. *Each market is different as EACH market has a product planning team that decides what is standard and what is optional.

Nope has nothing to do with adding the carbon buckets. Canada configurator shows base M4 coupe with M-stripe belts with no options applied. See base M3 below for sale in Canada, M-stripe seat belts with no buckets.

I agree each market is different. But like you said the pre-production cars were Euro spec, Canada(NA) spec is irrelevant to those cars tested. Euro base M3/M4 don't have M-stripe seat belts regardless if they have the carbon bucket option.

The odds are the AT white/black camo G87 was a Competition(Euro spec).

There will definitely be a Competition model. The majority of the work is already done with the G80/2's. They just need to finish the base model before they can move on to Comp testing, software tweaks and possibly minor hardware tweaks and they'll have an M2C ready to go. This is low hanging fruit for them, BMV will milk the sh!t out of the G87 with different models as much as they can until the very end.

I also think for the NA market they may screw base model owners with the cheap non-M sport seats and reserve those for the Comp model, but only time will tell. I hope I'm wrong.
