With the reveal of the M3 Touring today, the M specific version of iDrive 8 is now more visible. Basically more blue, red, and white but it looks nice and fresh. Also a fair bit of customisation around drive modes which I expect are really specific to the M3.

I wonder if the M60 will get this as a OTA software update? I recall a BMW Press Club release saying that M cars will get M specific iDrive UI. It depends whether BMW consider the M60 an M car I guess!

will be interested to see if this comes through OTA to all M60s, or if will be available to 2023's with 9T8 - 'Specific additional contents in Sport package'

This is the sort of thing you could code in using the simple Bluetooth adapter and something like iCarly or BimmerCode for iPhone on my X3. You could make it the welcome graphics say whatever, even Mini or Rolls Royce. I switched iDrive to the Alpina display because I liked the colors better.

Unlikely to be that simple due to the changes BMW made to the base module and coding architecture. I need a free afternoon to get my coding software set up again so until then I cant really test anything but initial reports for custom coding the IX are not looking positive.

My understanding is that you can’t code the iXs with Bimmercode because of the modules are now encrypted. At least that is what support at BimmerCode told me.

Yes possibly. I thought they had been encrypted before the iX and it was worked around, but I don't doubt that things might have changed.

It's a game of cat and mouse because while they can lock out third parties, they still need to provide official ways to do coding, and then those inevitably serve as models for unofficial tools. Maybe it becomes too prohibitive and not worth the effort to figure out how to support the newer modules.

Were BMW using Continental for their infotainment prior to iDrive 8? This might affect how easily it can be coded based on previous methods, too.

Nope. Harman Becker for ECE market and Panasonic for Japan (if I recall).
