Ventilated Seats DO NOT include adjustable Side Bolsters

Just an FYI or warning to those who have a choice. I have an M-Sport 2022 i4 e40. Black Vernasca leather. It came with ventilated seats. It was an order cancelation and my dealer asked if I wanted that instead of my forthcoming 2023. I took it.

What I've come to learn, is that Ventilated Seats and Adjustable side bolsters are not compatible in the BMW USA world. This is actually for a few models including the i4. I am on the thinner side (177lbs 6'1"), and slide around a bit in aggressive cornering. I think I will have to adjust my aggressive cornering style to include pushing my butt firmly to the seat back, and perhaps moving my back to be against the respective bolster when approaching a corner.

In the whole scheme of things, I still am relatively happy with my choice. But if someone is ordering a car, this is something to consider - ventilated seats (which do work well on the i4) or adjustable side bolsters.

Hey dude, you are late to the party here. That's a supply shortage thing.. normally they would but they removed this feature. Similarly your passenger doesn't have a lumber support and your trunk doesn't have a hands free kick to open either. normally that would not be true but it's 2022 and we are in a never ending supply chain nightmare.

I am pretty sure that’s not a supply issue as when I bought my 2020 M340i back in March of 2020 their was another M340i on the lot with ventilated seats. And like the OP said it also did not come with side bolsters. I believe two of the caveats of ventilated seats in the US are no side bolsters and only comes in black vernasca.

Dunno about ventilation bc I live in northeast and don't get them. But my 2021 x5 has bolsters, my 2019 x3 had bolsters (both sensatec). And my 2020 x3 black vernasca had bolsters but I know I dont have bolsters in my e40 sensatec bc that isn't an option due to supply chain and was made clear during the ordering process

My driver and passenger seat both do have lumbar support. This was a late 2022 car. So it's a lottery I expect.

There are reports from 2017 for example of X3s with/without ventilated seats not having/having side bolsters.

Really?? As far as I knew the passenger lumbar delete has been "part of the package" since earlier this year. And I believe your car was manufactured around the same time as mine (you picked yours up from the same dealership about 2 weeks after I did) but mine does not have passenger lumbar.

I'd be curious to see how impactful it is at different weights. I'm same height with 18 more lbs and wonder if I'd be impacted the same regardless. Might be an excuse to eat that extra donut.

Actually, it's not so much weight I think. It's torso width. So if the donuts make you stretch wide, all good! But if it makes you stretch forward, then you'll want the adjustable bolsters .

I'm a swimmer. So my chest is actually relatively broad. And the bolsters are even wider. So I'm pretty sure these aren't going to be ideal for spirited driving if you want that hugged in the bends feel.

Unless you are doing individual leather ventilated seats and adjustable side bolsters are mutually exclusive.

Weird! Mine is an early June 2022 build, and I do not have the passenger lumbar. I have driver side bolsters which comes with the leather package (option 490).

Hi everyone,
I am new on the forum here.

Was interested in purchasing a 430 convertible. I see that the only colors that offer ventilated seats are the vernasca leather in black and the vernasca leather in mocha. I live in LA so it does get hot.

I have been reading info that you might lose the side bolster adjustability if I decide to go with the ventilated seat option. Was that due to supply shortages during the last few years or is that loss of side bolster adjustability still ongoing as of today? Does anyone have a 2025 model year with ventilated seat option?

Thanks guys

This forum is for the i4 EV, not the 430.
