Creaking and rattling from rear seats and boot lid?

Does anyone else have annoying rattling from the boot and rear seats area, along with creaking when driving on uneven roads? I've tightened up the parcel shelf fixings but the rattle seems to be from that area, as well as perhaps the rear seat belt reels inside the seat backs.

Other than these annoyances, I'm loving the car and wouldn't swap it back for an ICE.

Thanks for any feedback.

Car has warranty, if this is easy to replicate, your BMW dealership will take care of it. It could be something loose that inaccessible to you. I once had a loose screw in the pillar that was making all kinds of rattle sounds.

No rattles here... and I'm pretty sensitive to these things. I had my M3, M8, and most recent X7 in for some similar fixes. 2 were broken clips and the 3rd ended up being a common issue with the F80 M3 that required me to lube a certain area every couple of weeks when it was warm outside. No relevance to your specific issue, other than knowing that they're pretty good at finding the correct solution.

To try to reduce repeat trips to get it resolved, it usually helps if you could isolate where it's coming from, and see if you could add or reduce pressure around that area to eliminate the sound. Depending on your relationship with your SA, you might want to request a quick ride-along so you could demonstrate your exact concern (so you don't get them saying it's "normal" as they're hearing something else, or made an adjustment to something stating it was "fixed" without really knowing what it was to begin with).

Good luck!

I did hear some rattling sounds but it turned out to be passenger seat belt. Maybe click in the belts and do a quick drive to see if the rattle goes away.

Yes! I have this same exact problem, and it's driving me insane! I've tried pulling the parcel shelves out, removing the netting at the top of the side storage in the rear, fastening the rear seat belts, lowering the rear seats, removing *everything* from the car that isn't from the factory, and I cannot pinpoint it.

For me it sounds just like when the front passenger seatbelt clasp rattles against the B pillar (when no one is in the seat, obviously), but it's coming from somewhere behind.

I'll also add that this was not there day 1 for me. It popped up maybe a couple of weeks later (only had the car for 5 weeks).

There are a few roads with less than ideal surfacing, and then I hear some creaks or the tiniest rattle. Once I return to smooth concrete or asphalt, the car is totally silent again. What I did that helped, is I used German Gummi Pflege on all 4 doors' rubber moulding and the same for the trunk area.

I'm 95% certain I've pinpointed the source of the creaking/rattling. In the image below you can see the top of the rear passenger seatbelt. I'm reasonably certain the creaking/rattling is coming from the seam/joint marked with the red line. If I press on the piece indicated by the arrow, it creates a very similar sound. I pressed a lot on this section whilst someone else was driving and we both agreed it sounded like the problem. There is a little bit of give on the piece indicated by the arrow on the passenger side, but on the driver's side the piece is much firmer and does not yield any noise when pressing. After I had pressed on this area quite a bit, I have since noticed that the noise has all but disappeared (for now).

You can easily remove that cover and see if there's something loose, a broken or a missing clip, a clip that is not fully snapped in, etc. These can easily happen in the factory and are just as easily fixed. You can order the clips online and you replace them. I have done this many times with good results.

There could also be a foam that goes in there for insulation and to prevent rattling noise that could be off, also something you can easily fix.

What I recommend before starting (provided you don't want to take this to a dealer) to take the trim off is to order spare clips so you're ready to fix the issue when you're taking the pillar cover off. It is best to use new clips anyway. You can get these for little to no $ on eBay.

Also, check for any screws that may hold the pillar trim on, typically behind a cap that says "Airbag" like the A pillar.

Good luck!

A confluence of three pieces of plastic...that is a recipe for noise...

Wonder if you can just spray some clear silicone spray in the joints?

Yes, I found it was coming from the join between the 2 rear fold-down seats. If you have "leather" seats (which is actually just vinyl) this makes a creaking sound. Just spray some silicone onto a rag and wipe the vinyl edges that meet together. Apart from this, others have mentioned lining the trunk between the plastic trim affixed to the interior of it with noise reduction tape but for me it was just the seat. You can test my theory by pushing on the area around the join and listening for the creaky sound or by driving around with the seats down you should have silence

Apply felt tape to upper area of that trim where it meets the headliner. I think there’s an SIB for noises coming from that area. Think I’ve done it on one car so far. Fixed a little bit, but not 100%.

I had the same issue, took it to the dealer, I drove a couple of times with the foreman, came back and he clean the door seals and put lubricant. Drove again and the noise was still there.
While driving he opened the sunroof, the noise when away. He cleaned the seals, it was dirty all around and the noise when away, he had to order a special lubricant for it, when I came back home I put some Gummi Pflege Stift, I had in the garage. The crackling noise is gone.
