Stop sale / recall on i4 and iX for Bad Electric Motor Drive Unit

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I was/am scheduled to pick up my i4 M50 on 12/19 at the BMW Performance center. My dealer just texted me and said that there is a stop sale for i4 M50i due to a recall. Is this a new recall separate from the batteries and the trunk sensor? The Performance center sent me an e-mail on Tuesday 11/29 to schedule for delivery. So did something happen between Tuesday 11/29 and Friday 12/2 or did my battery get added to the recall list? My car was produced in week 42 so that should be well after they solved the battery issues. Anyone know anything?

Dealer just updated me. It is the "electric drive unit." There were a bad batch and they are replacing them on all of the affected cars.

Update 12/27/2022
My dealer told me that BMW told them that they will have an update for them (the dealer) by the 2nd week of January.

My personal take is that if BMW is notifying dealers of the plan of action in the 2nd week of January the actual fix will not start rolling out until early February. Given that the fix is a mechanical item it will take time to ship the replacement all over the world. So, I guess early March I might get my car?

i4 M50 is a newly designed vehicle and these recalls are expected. The good news: BMW reacted quickly and faulty component is being replaced before the car will be delivered. Much better than having a vehicle recalled and repairs delayed due to shortage of parts.

Where do I learn about this to see if I'm impacted? Not showing in "My garage"

It's the same with my car. Was at VPC. Got shipped to dealer. Waiting there for a fix to come through.

It's across all BMW EVs, but only a really small number of them...

My buddy's car got built on the same run as my car and was delivered without hitch...

I've heard multiple reasons for the recall. Battery module is defective and requires placement. Drive unit is defective and requires replacement. Software/firmware needs to be upgraded...

Not really sure what's going on...but hoping things get sorted at some point.

Hopefully it's just software/firmware. Good luck!

My vehicle (2023 i4 M50) is currently under recall for the high voltage battery issue and unfortunately it requires hardware/parts changes. Last I checked with the dealer they were waiting for parts to be shipped from Germany and they said maybe it will take 2-3 weeks.

Luckily, as I mentioned in another thread, the dealer has been quite good with the loaners: they gave me an almost new 5 series as a loaner. Also BMW of NA is giving me an inconvenience payment so I am not too bummed about it.

The delivery stop is because of an issue with the electric motor. It affects about 25% of all cars scheduled to be delivered in December. This is from a Norwegian website, confirmed by BMW Norway:

Quote:
Quality control has revealed that, due to a manufacturing error, wear and damage can occur on a wheel bearing in the electric motor used in several of our electric cars, including the BMW i4 and BMW iX, he says - and explains further:

- In that case, this will be experienced as a noise from the driveline, before the driver is notified with an error message in the car's control display. You are then asked to contact our roadside assistance service.

Not good at all. I wonder how many cars were slated for delivery in December. 25% sounds like a lot of cars. Is the problem solved? Because if it isn't and 25% of January deliveries are also affected. Yikes. Then there is the issue of how long it is going to take BMW to produce extra motors to repair the cars already produced. This sounds like it is going to take a while for BMW to repair all of the cars slated for December delivery.

Some dialogue on i4 talk about this. Hearing some week 44 cars could be affected. Mine is week 45. Checking with my CA now

THANKS for the link. We know what 0065020400 is? BOTH our 2023 iX M60 have this. One says VIN status closed, one says VIN Status open. Both say customer notified, lol!

That link shows that its database was last updated in 2018. Is that correct?

If you put your VIN and check recalls it shows it was last updated today. (Tomorrow actually since Germany is ahead of us)

while it doesn't handle nearly as well, the performance stats are tremendous for the m60 - .2 seconds slower to 60 and .1 slow in the quarter mile vs. the 190K Porsche Cayenne GT. Not too shabby in the go fast department (and yes I know EVs are fast but 6K pounds and 600+ hp are working well here). Could bode well for the XM.
