Made the move from X5 to iX!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey all,

Been a busy week, finally getting around to posting. I made the move last Monday at the 11th hour of the month (literally at the dealership until almost 11 at night!), but in the end I welcomed a 2024 Oxide Gray iX50 to the family!

After test-driving the iX50, I didn't personally notice enough of a difference between the Air Suspension on my 45e and the lack thereof on the iX50 to make it worth the price jump to the M60, especially with the potentially reduced range. The one I chose is pretty much how I would have built it out options wise, I went with the Mocha interior which is a very nice color when matched with the Oxide Gray. The only things it does not have are the Bowers & Wilkins, as I felt the HK was good enough for my usual audio sources (Satellite Radio and streaming), and it was optioned with the Convenience Package and Multi-Function Seats instead of the Premium Package, so it doesn't have the Interior Camera or the eSIM. My research beforehand was that the Interior Camera is pretty useless except for selfies or in the event of a break-in, and since I use an MVNO for our phone plans and am not on with a major carrier, I couldn't use the eSIM, so both of those weren't "must haves" for me.

So far I am enjoying most things about iDrive 8, it is definitely different learning where things are buried in the menus but overall has been pretty good so far, no major issues or glitches.

A few things that I have noticed that I'm not a fan of (mostly minor annoyances, but if anyone knows a fix I'm happy to hear it!):

- Apparently every time you start the iX, it defaults to Auto Air Recirculation. I personally have always kept my cars on Recirculate, so having to do this every time is a bit of a bother.

- The Gesture Control motion for accepting notifications doesn't seem to work on iD8, even though the onboard instructions say that moving a finger towards the screen is the correct gesture for "confirming a notification". My use case for this is that I set several "Notify" options for SiriusXM, and on the X5, when it would pop up with the bar at the top of the screen with a notification, I could just make the motion towards the screen (without actually touching the screen) and it would change to that station. In the iX, it doesn't seem to do that, and I actually have to make sure I touch the screen before the pop-up goes away, otherwise I'm then having to go in to the Notifications to try to find it before it disappears.

- Assisted Driving(not the Plus/Hands-Free) is different from the X5 in that even if my hands are on the wheel, if I look over to fiddle with the display, it will "complain" about a Driver Distraction, whereas the X5 only did that if I was using the Plus mode and had my hands off the wheel.

- Like everyone else it seems, I did have some minor hiccups with the Electrify America setup process. I initially tried going through the EA app, and would get all the way through adding the 2-year plan until it got to "Confirm" on the payment page, and it would never move past that. Every time I hit confirm, I got a notification that they tried to "charge" my card $0.00 (I assume just a test to make sure I gave them valid card info), but could never move forward. So I just did the setup through the BMW app and it completed without issue, haven't had to use it yet so fingers crossed it doesn't have any problems when I try it out in a week or so.

Other than those few minor things, the car has been fantastic so far. I love the Digital Key Plus, and the range has been great. I have it set to cap at an 80% charge, and even at 80% it still shows around 280-290mi range which IMO is very good. The interior is much quieter than the X5 which I like, and honestly the seats feel like they are more comfortable. I do plan to get at least the roof tinted since I can occasionally feel heat coming through when driving in the middle of the day, and I also already ordered the MagSafe phone mount that was discussed in another post.

Thank you to all those who helped answer some of my questions I asked before buying, I am excited to be a part of this group!

You can turn on recirculate air by saying “hey BMW auto recirculate air”.

You can also add it as one of your eight shortcuts by going to the climate menu and holding the middle wheel down when you select it. Then access it by pushing up on the middle wheel and selecting it.

I don’t know of a way to have it default on.

Glad you made iX your next driving choice. Thanks for sharing!

I am still partial to X5M and this may very well be the next vehicle in our garage.

I like this car - I've had BMW's for 40+ years and while I enjoy BMW designs that I would consider timeless...I also appreciate the funky stuff whether it be Bangle flame surfacing, the Shoe, or this

Working at a BMW store I get the privilege of driving most cars...and the past year I must say I reach for the iX more often than not. Great cars.

Congrats on the purchase.

A few months ago I tested both and also had the X5 for a few days as a loaner. The iX felt like driving the future every time I was looking back or going into the X5. I had an M550xi so logical move was the M60. Welcome to the club

Coding on IX and other SP21 models like G70 is no longer possible since BMW has moved to secure coding 2.0

Did you also notice the huge downwards move in interior quality?

The lower door panels, the center arm rest (the sides): all hard cheap plastics.

The way the doors close …

I jumped from x5 into ix on my testdrive. The ix drives more pleasantly, sporty, but there’s a huge difference in quality sense.

I like your car roxxor. Not just as an EV accomplishment (consistently getting close to or exceeding its stated range), being well built and handling well for a large SUV let alone a heavy EV, but personally I like its looks — as does my wife. We personally vote two ”well done’s!”

Could you please when you have time take a picture of it in the direct sunshine, for I keep hearing it is as much a champagne color as it is a gray one. What does it look like to you and your wife if you had to name its color with a word.

Yes this is true. Many times it has a v slight golden brown tinge. I like the oxide grey.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by interior refinement. Maybe there’s a drop from leather to fake stuff but that doesn’t bother me a huge deal.

I dislike the frameless doors but with the soft closing feature it means I just tap it gently shut and it pulls it the rest of the way - so mitigated.

The seat heating spreading to the centre and door armrests makes it feel much more comfy. The controls are all pretty nice except some plasticky steering wheel buttons.

I think they need to work on the haptic feedback and the control wheel is not as responsive or as dexterous as it should/used to be.

Personally I preferred the more adjustable seats of previous cars (thigh supports and upper back adjustment bmw!!!).

But from an F15 and even a G30 perspective it’s a nice cabin. Many passengers have really had the wow feeling getting into it.

I think BMW will learn from this and hopefully the only way is up.

The color changes depending on the angle of the sunlight and if it cloudy or not. I like that a lot !

It is very hard to describe, I will try to get some pics in the sunlight tomorrow. Depending on the light hitting it you could go with champagne, gold, silver, gray, it’s really a toss up. That was the hardest part for my wife when we went to lunch the other day with coworkers and were walking to the parking lot, she couldn’t figure out what color to call it

The doors closing I think is mainly due to the fact that they are frameless, but it really doesn’t bother me too much. I will say the center console part that you mentioned does stick out a bit, I agree they should have made more of it match the interior selection, or at least used the carpet-like material that is used on the sides of the X5. As for the lower door panels, I prefer them to be the more durable material at this point with younger kids constantly getting in and out. I’m sure once they release the newer X5 all electric that it will have a full/extended leather option.

Well, I must have jinxed myself by saying I hadn't had any glitches/issues yet, as I've had 2 known ones pop up.

- Yesterday afternoon I got the "Emergency Call System Malfunction" alert twice, but it went away and hasn't come back since, and all functions were still available.

- Today after the car had been sitting for a few hours in this wonderful summer heat we're having, as I started driving I noticed the "bee-buzzing" sound coming from the front passenger side of the headliner. Went away after a few minutes of driving so I assume the seal firmed back up after getting some airflow. Thanks to hugo_nz for his SIB post on a different thread discussing the issue.

Nothing super important and still loving the car, just making notes of things to discuss with the dealer down the road.

One thing I learned through the years: don’t mention your car being faultless too much 😂 karma is always around the corner 😝
