Low Battery Warning

Is there such a thing? On an ICE car you got the 50 mile warning and a second, 30 mile warning. Is there something similar on an EV? Is it mile or %?

I tried looking in the manual but couldn’t really find it…

You’ll get a warning when it gets below 20% or 10%. I can’t remember which one because I generally don’t let it go down that low. It definitely turns red at a certain point with an audible warning. No different than a low fuel warning on an ICE vehicle.

There are multiple warnings including turtle mode where power becomes limited. The car is not going to surprise you with a sudden loss of power unless you're seriously inebriated and ignored the multiple signals (warning lights, display messages, and reduced power).

I love it when people laugh at me when they find out that I drive an electric vehicle. “You’re going to run out of power and get stranded!” My next response is usually something to the effect of, “So how many times have you run out of gas, or do you look at your fuel gauge?”

Test from CarWow on range for various EVs (unscientific but educational). Yes, there is a warning and yes there is some range left in all of them at zero (roughly equivalent to the buffer - GOM reads "0" but there is range left). It's generally a really bad idea to run the car until it reads zero - for any EV - because a) finding a charging station may be problematic if you only have 2 miles of range left (and you'll likely need a flatbed or a truck with a generator - good luck in the Backabeyond), and b) not good for the battery.

When the battery is below 10%, your power output (the left bar on the instrument panel) will be restricted. Before that, you get no warning.

Yes, it happens at 40 miles remaining range, and the warning stays on as an exclamation mark on the lower right screen. Another warning pops up at 25 miles remaining. At least that's how it is on my 24 M60.

You get multiple warnings. I believe it begins at 20%. It’s happened to me once or twice.

That’s not true. I’ve run to 1-2% many times. You get the “power reduced” mode at 2%.

It might be at 10%. Like I said on an earlier reply, that’s only happened to me once or twice. Whatever it was, it was definitely noticeable.

Maybe this is a 2024 change? Maybe iDrive 8.5 it will include it, or add layer of range warning that is new.

I do think it is 10%, as ONE time and ONE time only I dipped to 10% and then lower (I forgot to charge the night before, and I had to go to work).

The i3S was at 6.5%. Very specific, lol!

Warnings are at 40 miles and 25 miles regardless of battery %. I constantly get down to 1-5% so I see it all the time. EA chargers are atrocious nowadays so I’m lucky if I get a 25% in 30 min.

Yes, I've experienced this a few times. It starts nagging at 40 miles left (approximately 10%), and then every 5-10 miles left after that. I appreciate the warners, but it's quite annoying when I intentionally know I'm going to arrive safely with 1% battery left!

I just recently ran my battery down to 2% on a road trip when I finally made it to an EA charger. I got multiple warnings. I got one when it hit 10%, and the color of the battery gauges all changed to red. I also got an exclamation mark at the bottom of the adaptive charging gauge. Finally, (and not sure if it was cause I was using NAV) I got a message on the secondary screen asking me if I wanted the system to find the nearest charger when I got to 10%.
