(UK) Used i4 M50?
Hello all - joined this lovely forum to ask this question, and apologies if this has been answered in another thread,
Currently sitting with a Jaguar XE 20d which has served me well since 2018. Most of the time its short work commutes, as well as the occasional UK based trip. I'm based in the central belt of Scotland, but occasionally I'll be driving out into the Highlands, or down to London. The (paid up) jag is still doing fine though it's starting to date and getting to a stage where I'll likely start seeing more overheads, and I've been thinking about an M50 for some time. I'm perfectly happy buying a used BMW but I realise there's e.g. impact on range with increasing age. I'm wondering what lifespans are we looking at for a M50 in UK weather driving in a fairly conventional fashion? I'm probably inclined to run any car until it becomes impractical (in my mind that's until it's about 7+ years old) than for example change every 3 or so years, but I don't know if that's reasonable or if I should treat the current generation of EVs as having a shorter lifespan? I tend to pay for a car purchase through a loan + part-ex than do PCP etc (happy to take advice on this too, for EVs). The very short question to my ramblings is how long should I expect an M50 to last if I want to use it the way I use my current car? Last edited by Pareidolia; 10-12-2023 at 06:43 AM.. |

Hi
I’m almost a year into my i4 M50 in Cumbria. I only do 9k a year and predominantly home charge. I have only needed one DC charge so far on a 240 mile run in the depths of winter. -4C and a snowy M6 with a long wait for a crash to be cleared and 4 Christmas present drop offs loosing previous heat. 240 miles used 111% battery. In summer 220 miles used 78%… I’m seeing an 80% range between 150-235 miles depending on the weather and previous driving. It was 195 miles this morning at about 3C. So, based on the cars estimated range, there has been no noticeable degradation since November last year. The 150 mile low was with -10C outside… Logic goes that regular DC charging stresses the battery and causes more degradation than the much slower home AC charging. So, if you mostly AC home charge, degredation should also be minimal for you. Oh, I plan to keep this car until it is 5-7 years old. I have no concerns based on what I’ve seen so far.

I viewed a website the other week which had some really detailed analysis on how to maximise your battery life but can't find it. I think from memory, avoiding DC chargers and realistically keeping charge between 75% and 45% as often as you can (75% to 65% was best but realistic for most people!).

I bought an M50, also live in Scotland, also will do trips similar to yourself, plus I also plan to keep it 6-8 years depending!
Had the car nearly a year, 99% of the time I charge at home, so far I've seen no battery degrading. So far very happy with it, although possibly wish I'd got the 20" alloys. 😂 Any ICE car now seems slow and noisy. 😂 |
