About to do my first oil change on my 540d. I am not finding clear information about the specific oil to use in the diesel and the specific oil filter.

Please direct me or advise me where to look.

For the oil, ignore viscosity, what is important is the BMW oil approval. The factory approved oil is LL12FE. Alternately, you are allowed to use LL04 as a substitute. Note the LL12FE stands for "fuel economy" and has a high temperature high sheer rating of 3.0. LL04 typically has an HTHS of 3.5 or greater. You may have a few percentage points lower fuel economy, but greater protection with a higher HTHS oil.

I'd use a BMW approved LL04. One of the best deals on an LL04 oil is Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5w-30, available online from WalMart for $26.44 for a 5 quart jug with free shipping. I'm using it in both of my BMWs (M550iX and E39 540)
