Edmunds Review: Our Long-Term BMW iX Is a Refreshingly Carefree EV

Our Long-Term BMW iX Is a Refreshingly Carefree EV

That's not something we can say about most of our other electric long-termers

  • We've put nearly 20,000 miles on our long-term 2022 BMW iX xDrive50.
  • In that time, it's been one of the most reliable and enjoyable electric cars in our long-term fleet.

I agree with the assessment. I have almost 10k trouble free miles. However after coming from two Audi e-trons, Mustang Mach-e GTPE and my wife's current EQE, have to say the IX technology is on par with the e-trons. Just overall not good. The Mach-e is really good and the EQE is excellent.

As someone who owned a '19 etron Prestige for 4 years; (and loved it btw), I can not agree with the statement that the tech in the iX is "on par with the etrons".

The tech in the iX blows away the tech in an etron, imho.

Can you elaborate? What aspects of iX technology do you think are average or worse than those others. This is the first time I have seen anyone put Audi, Mach-E, and EQE tech above iX.

I’m glad Edmunds had a good sample. Certainly not my experience. Three weeks w/o the IX and two more months to go before the coolant valve fix is projected….

I'm curious too. Usually I hear people saying quite the reverse.

After owning a 2022 e-tron Sportback, I consider a bricked iX to be more tech advanced, usable and reliable than Audi, especially the e-tron

I think the tech is wonderful and it's an overall awesome vehicle. However, I have had more recalls than I can count, digital key issues, software issues, etc... I have had the vehicle for about 1.5 years and it's been in the shop about 5 times. We also have an Audi etron (the tech, the drive, the range, etc.. are not on par with the iX), but have only dealt with 1 or 2 recalls and other than that it's been super solid. That Porsche Macan EV is looking pretty damn tempting for the future.

Both our Tesla’s have been carefree, but I’d love to get the iX next. Only issue is I’d rather have an X7 for the price, so that’s what we went with in addition to the Tesla. But maybe the neue klasse will be better and worth waiting for…

Mine just crossed 10k miles and 16 months of ownership. Had a 2-3 month pause after I got rear-ended before I got it repaired at a BMW certified shop. Otherwise no major issues. Still enjoy driving my iX.

12.5k miles here in a iX
Worry free
Most of our experiences are anecdotal. However, coming from a Model Y , I would say iX has been more worry free and enjoyable by a good amount.

From https://spectrum.ieee.org/this-car-runs-on-code (worth reading).

The electric vehicle is a direct reflection of how software engineers performed (or did not).

"Modern car: about 100M lines of code vs 6.5M lines of code in Boeing 787 (avionics and onboard support systems)

Modern car software: 30% of code dedicated to diagnostics

50% of car warranty issues are now related to electronics and embedded software"

Thats from 2009 so the metrics are somewhat different now but the sentiment is still true. Its now more about the software engineering and development teams because automotive physics of chassis, suspension, steering, etc are very mature and thankfully so as you wouldn't want them to be at a reliability level of the current software...

From very unscientific experiment of talking to friends who have IX, the car has been in general not that carefree as Edmunds puts it. There are too few cars out to make a reliable call on how.... reliable the car is. Tech is new, few cars, etc. There is comparison perhaps to others thats valid.

For 100k you buy Macan EV today, nothing else is there in performance-quality-badge-looks category that matches it.

Neue Klasse is interesting and also looking forward to it.

my neighbor went from a model x to the ix and they also tell me they have had better luck with the BMW over the Tesla but also told me they did like the charging network of Tesla when they traveled. But fit and finishes etc.. far superior for sure.

Mine is at 8500mi and 14 months. I had 7 defects incliding the airbag and 5 visits to the dealeship to get all that fixed. Granted, none of those were actual malfunctions or breakdowns.

My personal EV journey has been Tesla Model 3 LR-RWD (never had any issues other than software was still really being developed when I bought mine, but after about a year, it was well sorted aside from the auto wipers never working well), Rivian R1T (dumpster fire in both hardware and software reliability), my wife has a Volvo XC40 Recharge which has been flawless in 1 year and 6k miles, and now my iX that I've had for 3 months and 3k miles, which has also been flawless.

Can't actually buy a Macan EV right now and we have no idea on reliability. If the experiences from the Taycan carryover it probably wont' be great. Not being negative, because I really want the new Macan, just current reality.

FYI we have had 2x EQS, Lyriq and the iX. We currently have both an EQS and iX right now. The iX has been by far the most reliable of all the EV's in our garage. No serious SW issues (we have lemon'd an EQS and Lyriq due to SW issues) on the iX.

Haha. It's bigger on the outside, but smaller on the inside because of all the battery storage needed.

Given the issues Porsche have experienced with the 1st generation, 2020 Taycan, I’d be looking at the Macan EV during its second year not the first.
