It is better for them to add the new drivetrain with the upcoming face-lift.
Why would anyone buy the facelifted i4 with the old powertrain? |

Car and Driver actually says the i4 M50 is 1243lbs heavier. As heavy as it is, the i4 still pulls .97g on the skid pad, and ran a quicker time in a track comparo than the much lighter M240i. So its not like the i4 is horrible in the handling department. On the other hand, it rides better and smoother than the previous 5 series, and has almost 600lbs of effortless and instant torque for 98% of your street driving needs rather than going after Nurburgring numbers. I find the immensely practical hatchback configuration to be irreplaceable.
I ran a 11.48 sec 1/4 mile on the Dragy at over 121mph, and 3.4 sec w/o roll out. 3.2 sec without. If it really gains 55HP, then it could possibly dip into the 10's and high 2 sec 0-60 times.

I have the i4M50. I can't imagine under which circumstance you would need more power. I'd rather take a charging infra in the car that doesn't throttle the charging speed after X number of relatively continued DC charging sessions, more range, faster AC charging, power-to-grid, a better AWD system, and other actually useful advances and features. More power, however, is not one of them.

Only number general public care about is 0-60. They don’t care it comes in at 1000 pounds heavier. They just want to say 0-60 in 3 seconds and under.

The car is mostly RWD, the AWD system is not permanent and, under certain circumstances, in the winter mostly, you feel the rear of the car slide more than what you'd expect it from an AWD car, and certainly a lot more than my previous G20 xDrive. When it's slippery it can react relatively quickly, but still, it doesn't feel as stable as an xDrive car.
When you hammer it, it engages all wheels as well. You can kind of force it also uaing the ESP menu, but still, it's very much computer-controlled. Engaging Sport mode doesn't engage it either, unless you accelerate hard and the computer decides that it needs the additional grip. I'm not 100% sure about how it's actually programmed to behave. I once asked a mechanic at the dealership and even he didn't know for sure. It's very opportunistic and therefore I feel you gotta be more careful than in a petrol xDrive car. Curious about whether the i5 is the same or not. BMW has never said that the i4 is xDrive, but they do with the i5.

I have driven an i4 eDrive40, i4 M60, and i5 M60. The eDrive40 with only RWD was the most fun out of the 3. The M50 wasn’t great on turns. The i5 with the rear wheel steering does a much better job. There is definitely something lacking in the i4, but there are a lot of people who just want that straight line performance. I live in a crappy weather area and AWD is a requirement for me, unfortunately.

Currently in an i4 M60 2 day loaner. It is undoubtedly fast in a straight line, but it’s far to easy to out drive the suspension and tires. IMHO the last thing it needs is more HP. I’m already looking forward to getting back in my G82.
