Recording a video with iPhone

I noticed that last two times I was in the car I was unable to record a video with my iPhone while the car is on? Anyone else experiencing this?
I wonder if it’s an Apple or BMW issue?

I'm guessing that you have a CarPlay app in the background that's overriding the use of the video or audio system. Can you try to force shut down any CarPlay compatible apps in your phone (Apple Maps, Waze, Google Maps, Spotify, Amazon/Alexa, etc.)?

correct, and yes none are open on the iPhone..

Yes, I also found I cannot take videos while in the car, though I think if you try to take one on certain apps it will show as just a still image until you're out of the car, then will display normally. Not sure if disabling CarPlay helps/fixes it, but haven't really felt the need to take videos while in the car very often.

Strange. I have no problem recording a video while connected to my iX via CarPlay whilst playing songs via Apple Music simultaneously! I have an iPhone 16 Max Pro and I’m on iOS 18.1 and my car is a 2025 iX 50 on iDrive 8.5.

Well we're all over the place with models (both phone and car) and OSs (both phone and car) so not sure what the commonality is. I have a 13 PM on 17.6.1 with a 2024 x50 on iDrive 8.5. Can't seem to take videos usually but maybe I'll see if I can later today if I remember.

I am trying to figure out if it’s Apple or BMW issue, spoke to BMW today, they think is an Apple issue , crazy

Is the screen blurred out on your iPhone when trying to record a video? If so, press the record button on the phone and after the music stops in the car, press the red record button again.

Yes it does get blurry, I didnt have music playing I was trying to record the BMW Halloween video , I will try to record without anything on..

Here what I found out, while playing Apple Music, it will record a video, but while playing Sirius or FM, it will will not record I noticed the microphone on the top of the BMW screen is going in and out. It seems to picking up the audio from the iPhone when not playing Apple Music.
Any Thoughts?

Great find! I think it’s a real bug!!

It’s because CarPlay is still passively connected to the BMW in the background and those two services in iDrive are fighting over the mic.

If you go to Mobile Devices and disable CarPlay (just use Bluetooth for Telephone and Audio) this problem will go away.

you are 100% correct! when I disconnect from CarPlay it records Perfectly. So I assume Its a Apple issue..
