BMW Tesla Supercharging Network Access & NACS Adapter announcement imminent?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
This is the first I’m seeing that BMW might have circulated a bulletin amongst the dealer network that a customer communication is coming regarding a CCS1 to NACS adapter presumably for Tesla Charger Network access:

Short from BMW of Fort Washington in Pennsylvania.

CA here We were told about this back in Early quarter Three. And soon obviously, Bmw will be changing their charging ports to NACS standard.

Less than a month ago it was reported BMW’s Supercharger access had been delayed until “later in 2025” for whatever reason. I’ll say this, if BMW is smart they will make their charge ports standard on the rear driver side of the car to work with Tesla’s chargers properly so you don’t have to take up two spots to plug in since most of Tesla’s chargers have very short cables.

I also hope to see Tesla work with automakers to implement plug and charge. Nothing sucks more on a road trip or if it’s raining or cold than when you have to fumble with an app and wait for the car to begin charging while the app communicates with the charger over the internet. I’ve been in several places where there’s such poor cell service that EA’s app wouldn’t even work so I had to end up tapping to pay which meant I didn’t get my discounted rate.

Also hope BMW updates the software in the cars so plug and charge is linked to the car and not the specific BMW profile being used. When I drive our i7 on my profile the EA plug and charge doesn’t work because it’s linked to my fiancé’s BMW account. Same thing with the 5G Hotspot… I wish it was just linked to the car instead of each BMW driver profile needing its own separate paid data plan.

Or at least an extension available so we don’t take two spots. New Tesla station being built are positioned to where works for all but I still think cable will be short

Yeah the V4 chargers have longer cables. The problem with extensions is that the more wire you put between your car and the charger the more resistance there usually is which increases heat and reduces efficiency. Tesla should’ve built longer cables on their V3 chargers but they were trying to be as cheap as possible.

I think the rear driver side or front passenger side will become the standard positions going forward because that’s what works with Tesla’s chargers and they are by far the dominant player in the charging market. To me driver rear is the most convenient anyway because you don’t have to walk around the car to plug in.

Yes I do agree that longer cable do all that but with extension it should give us same length as Electrify America does.

I’d rather see BMW spend money on their Ionna charging network. Tesla is already locking Rivian out even though they were approved for Tesla.

That has to do mainly with improper cheaply made adaptors

There’s to much risk of catching fire… 🔥

NACS all the way… ‼️

Tesla say that cable extension are dangerous. Tesla supercharger V3 use a liquid-cooled cable.
Here is some news from 2015: https://chargedevs.com/newswire/tesl...-charge-times/

According this new, Tesla is working on a suitable extension: https://insideevs.com/news/711791/te...tension-cable/

V3 was designed well before non-Teslas were using them. No reason to design them any longer.

V60 Recharge doesn’t do DC fast charging (just like BMW PHEVs).

Likely she just has a j1772 to adapter to use Tesla Destination chargers. Like a Tesla tap.

Or, if Volvo sold her a NACS adapter for her v60 recharge shame on them.

Yes, DC fast charging is only available for the EVs, she would charge her hybrid at destination chargers with an adapter.

Just got access for my Polestar 2 and it is indeed a game changer. Also often cheaper than EVGo etc.

Pro tip - get an A2Z or Lectron adapter when it opens up for BMW or you’ll be waiting much longer for the official adapter. Those see also built better than the Tesla-designed (“official”) one.

This will definitely be what the intermediate to long term future of what EV charging will (must) be.

Speed would be a limiting factor there... Ever take your phone off the wireless pad in the car .. so much wasted heat energy etc

No it won’t.

This will be for AC charging, which is the biggest hurdle. Specifically as it relates to charging for apartments in cities (note: most other people will charge in their driveways/garages).

Instead of having posts on the sidewalk that people have to manage the sharing of (and that take up space and require maintenance), the parking spots themselves can be electrified. At these voltages, heat losses are negligible. They’ve already shown to be 90+% efficient.
