I4 40 - Advise and Range
would love some tips from fellow owners. I’m thinking about switching from a M340 to an i4 40. This will be my first time with an electric vehicle.
Power Delivery I’ve never really pushed the M340 to its limits, and the torque numbers seem quite similar between the two. Is the power delivery smooth? I’m assuming it’s almost instant since it’s electric? Range What are the practical range figures when the battery is at 80%? I’ve seen estimates of 200, 210, and 250 miles. My commute is about 50 miles round trip, mostly on motorways 95%,Do you get much regeneration on motorways when easing off the accelerator? Charging If I decide on the i4, I’ll be installing a home charger to take advantage of cheaper electric rates. I’ll only need to charge to 100% for occasional long trips, but is it a good idea to charge to 80% every day? Thanks |

It's not an easy question to answer, speed, temp, driving style, wind , wet all play a role in that estimate. Also the config of your car and tire spec... For my x40 I seldom get under 180. In ev land our mpg is miles per kilowatt hour. Soo the bigger the number the better the efficiency aka further you go. That's more accurate than the range estimator on the dash bc the estimator will change a lot. Also short trips vs long trips on the highway etc. I drive on the highway mostly around 73mph. In the winter I have between 3 and 3.4 kwh and in the summer I get 3.8 to 4. So 80% of the useable battery in my car is 64.5 kwh. So when you do the math at 3kwh I can expect to get about 193 miles @ 80% charge. In the summer under more ideal I will get 258miles. Hope that helps. When you go electric it takes a min to figure all this stuff out.
Also for charging, Yes going to 80 % daily should have minimal effect on your long term battery capacity fade so don t worry too much there. Last edited by mlanes01; 02-01-2025 at 12:14 PM.. |

Power delivery isn't instant. BMW calibrated the throttle response similar to an ICE vehicle. Having said that, the M50 version will feel like it's punching you in the back vs the eDrive 40 which is still quick but not shockingly quick.
Range: My commute used to be 80miles round trip mostly on the highway(motorway) but it was also in heavy traffic. I would charge every 2-2.5days to 80% from 10-15%. You wont regen much when on the motorway. Even on my heavy traffic commute, you don't net much energy from regen (you still have to accelerate before you slow/regen down). I typically charge to 80% when using DCFC, at home I charge to +20% of what I need for the next two days of commute. So about 65-75%, depending on if I'm able to charge at work for a little bit or not. |

Power Delivery
Very smooth and strong. Different to my M4, which is just brutal once the turbos are spinning. Range My round trip commute is a mixture of 70mph dual carriageways, 60mph back rounds, and 30s over a 30mile each way. For each way it equates to 15% consumption. I do not bother with the regeneration as I have barely noticed any benefit. Charging I charge up at work to 80%. To charge to 100% takes a disproportionate length of time for the extra 20%. Plenty of people say not to exceed 80% regularly. Those that charge to 100% all the time are those that do not own their own car, but lease. If charging at home, ensure that you switch to a EV tariff. Overnight, the typical rate is 7p per KWhr - and that is for all the electrical consumption in the home during the night. |

After life with an i4 M50, the M3 and M4 do not feel brutal at all. They feel fast but utterly gutless unless at full boil. I wish Car and Driver did a 5-100 mph test. The i4 is one full second ahead at 60. Maybe less by 100, but still ahead is my expectation. Also, unless you handle the shifting yourself, the M3/4 automatic will always be in the wrong gear when exiting corners. Brutal would be the M launching with launch control. I've had my i4 for 10k miles, and I've literally never used launch control.
