Forced to replace 1 tire, with nearly old tires, what to do now?
To make a very long/stressful story short, I got a nail in my tire while on a road trip so had to get a new Bridgestone Alenza 001 275/40/R22.
All my tires are at a 5/6mm tread and I was planning on switching to different tires that last longer but, in my stranded situation, my ONLY option was the Alenza (at the time, I was glad that was even an option) I'm thinking I'm better off selling this tire with 400 miles on it versus waiting for the other three tires to go bald and then have to try to sell this tire with 3000 miles on it. I live in San Jose area. Curious if anyone on this group knows where I can sell this tire or anyone looking to buy a tire or maybe just some advice on what to do in this situation. Thanks! |

I had the same thing happen on my iX.
I was at 5,5,5 and 4/32. I decided to replace all tires and keep the 2 remaining tires with 5/32 left that DIDN'T already have a plug repair (lots of nails where I live). My reasoning was that these tires aren't always available, and now I have backups at home that they can temporarily reinstall in a pinch if I have an irreparable tire so that I at least can drive my car while waiting a week or so for replacements to be shipped. And when I turn in my lease in 18 months, if any tires don't meet BMW's measurement requirements, I can just reinstall the 2 tires I have to meet the requirement so I don't have to buy new tires for the next guy. OR, if I decide to keep my car at end-of-lease, then I still have them as backups. |

If you have a lease, you should swap all of them out and just keep this “mismatched” at which is above 4/32 to pass lease return.
If you’re keeping the car, you can just buy another Alenza to match the new one and put the new ones on the rears since they wear out twice as quickly, and keep the 5/32 one as a spare. And after they all wear out, swap out all to better tires. |

If you’re getting a completely different brand of tyre, then obviously you’d replace all 4 and attempt to sell the single new Alenza locally.
Good luck, as selling a single tyre can sometimes be somewhat frustrating. You might even want to donate it just to get it out of the garage. |

When I replaced my original GoodYear tires with MICHELIN PRIMACY TOUR, I kept one of the front tires which was a good shape (the rear ones are the ones that were in the replace point). I am glad I did because I recently got a nail in the new Michelin rear tire and was not sure it was repairable. When I called TireRack they said the Michelins were on back order. The tire was finally repaired and running ok but glad I have a spare in my garage.

these are all great ideas. I bought the car, not lease. only issue is I don't have a place to store this monstrosity of a tire in my garage.
I think for now we're going to rotate the tires so that the highest tread is with the new tire to get a few more miles out of them, then replace all four. what an expensive nail!!!! |

Tangentially related, what tire tread depth gauge do people here use? Any recommendations?

I just use an Amazon cheapie. Suppose with tires you can go more expensive/quality for a measuring tool since tires are important, but I measured it against a block I have and it was accurate.
Edit to add: I didn't include a picture but it's exactly like ggalanis has below.

In a situation like the OP's, online retailer Tire Rack will shave a new tire to the tread depth of your other tires. I don't believe it is too expensive.
