Tariff Pricing Hits the Parts Counter

I got a quote a week or two for a new water pump at my cost was somewhere in the low $200s. I just now finally pulled the trigger and my cost was $250.

You can't buy a new car since they are so expensive and now it is very expensive to fix the car you currently have. I am over $1,000 in parts to do a complete belt job on my X1.

The X1 has a transvers mounted B46 with a mechanical water pump.

The belt was wobbling a bit and the mechanic stethoscoped all of the tensioner, idler pulley, water pump and all three had bad bearings in addition to the harmonic balancer on the way out.

No one told you to buy an expensive, over engineered BMW whose parts are already known to be expensive even before post-covid inflation and these little tarrifs.

People so worked up over tariffs, yet don't make a peep when congress passes a bill for 1T that we need to print out of thin air.

You think BMW prices are expensive. Our kids Toyota parts have had Aston Martin price tags for years.

Yep, that's where I'm confused. I'm on ECS Tuning's site and I'm seeing B46 water pumps for $165. If your mechanic is charging you $250 for a water pump I'd want to know where he's getting it from. $1K in parts sounds really steep unless I'm missing something.

The immediate affect of the tariffs will be new cars, car parts, followed by used cars, lastly insurance.

https://www.npr.org/2025/04/18/nx-s1...nce-rate-hikes

https://www.fox7austin.com/news/tari...-canada-mexico

I have already seen a 20% increase in price for dc frigs made in South Africa.

I have also seen a 100%+ increase in price for cameras made in China.

That water pump is $50-100 on rockauto. The dealer just wanted to make more money and you believed it was due to tariffs like a fool.

You're of course being taken huge advantage of by your "dealer." The BMWNA MSRP for that water pump, 11518623574, is currently $165.10. You had the option of ordering from Ziegler BMW's online site (or many other ones) for $108.21, or less than 1/2 what you paid your local BMW dealer apparently. If you were quoting the entire assembly including the thermostat, you can see typical pricing on their cooling system page for the X1 with BMWNA MSRP prices along with their discounted pricing.

To add to options, here's a good list from FCP Euro for less than the OP was quoted: https://www.fcpeuro.com/Parts/Engine...ds=11518623574

There are also other dealer vendors like getbmwparts.com and bmwpartspros.com.

I have a wholesale account where I get the standard 20% off retail. I have been buying parts from this dealer for years.

To replace just the water pump you need to pull the engine. To do the job in the car you have to replace the water pump, thermostat and alternator bracket assembly which is part number: 11518601366. I guess you could pull the bracket and replace the pump but by the time you reseal the bracket to the block with the special locktite gasket maker I much rather get the entire assembly for an extra $100.

I know how to repair my own car, I know how to shop for parts and this is my 7th BMW.

Just letting everyone know the prices just went up from a few weeks ago.

What's crazy is they are charging you tariff pricing on parts they more than likely already had in stock......

Also they best not be applying tariff pricing on labor (I've seen this as well)

Thanks prezi!

You might want to update your assumption this is still the lowest cost way to buy parts. Dealer retail can be higher than MSRP and would bet the online parts channel operated mostly by dealers have lower prices than your 'wholesale' pricing.
