Y vs H-Rated Tires for 2023 iX xDrive 50

Hello!
I’ve searched the forums and couldn’t find any posts about the particular problem we are having getting replacement tires for our iX.

We thought we had found the correct replacement tires for our needs, but Costco refuses to install them because the original tires on our car are
speed rated Y, not H like the replacements. He basically made it seem like it was illegal to install new tires that didn’t match the speed rating of the originals.

We need all-season tires because we live in the Pacific NW. We can’t seem to find any ev-appropriate Y-rated all-season replacements.

The replacement tires we want to install have been mentioned in a lot of the forums, so it seems like other iX owners have had them installed successfully. They are the Michelin Primacy Tour A/S.

Has anyone else run into this problem?
We have the xDrive 50.

TIA

Do you have an M60? That car goes north of 150 MPH, so it requires the higher speed rating tires. A tire shop won’t install tires rated for 130 MPH on a car that can go over 150.

The xDrive50 is governor-limited to 124 MPH, so we can put H rated tires on those.

You didn’t mention which iX you have nor the tire size. What is your maximum speed on your iX? An H tire maxes out at 130mph.

iX50 caps out at 130mph.

Many who live in snow need real studless winter tires and those won’t come with speed ratings higher than T. Costco is annoying like that. You will need to go to other tire shops to install tires that are less than OE spec for load/speed ratings or non-OE sizes.

Do you have 22" wheels? looks like OEM tires are all summer Y rated. Costco will only install tires that match the specs on the door tire decal. Tire rack has lots of options and most independent installers will install them.

They probably aren’t looking at the car’s tire requirements, just the existing tires. If you got the summer tires, like the Bridgestones, they are Y rated, because that’s all they make. But if you had ordered it with the all seasons, they would have been H rated.

I believe if you ordered it with summer tires, you get option code 840 added (increased top speed limiter - which brings it to 155mph).

I have an M60 with 21" all seasons, so I do not have the 150 mph top speed. I am at the lower 130. It depends on which type of wheel/tire you ordered as far as I understand it. If you ordered a 50 with summer tires, you get the higher top speed limiter.

I ran into this same issue many years ago with Costco as well. I just stopped going to them. They are overly cautious. It is good of them to warn you about the difference and to instruct you not to drive at speeds the tires are not rated for. But once you know, the rest should be on you.

Just go to a regular mechanic and they will gladly install them for you.

Now if you actually want Y rated all seasons, Michelin offers the

Discount Tire had no problems installing 275/50r20 V rated tires on my iX50. They also check first whether the tire fits the car but they use more common sense in that.

Sometimes, the reason why we can’t have nice things in the US is due to our litigious society. Pep Boys refused to plug a simple leak due to a small nail in my iX. They said they aren’t allowed to do it anymore and I needed to find an independent shop.

Sadly I’m sure Costco has been sued for much less so they can’t even provide such convenient tire services anymore.

Good forbid, BMW lets us disable the warning messages each time we enable ADAS!! 🙀😹🤪

Interesting... I have an xDrive50 (July 2023 build) that came with the Y rated summer Bridgestone Alenzas. But, I do not have 840 on my build sheet.

Interesting since it seems (based on reading the current posted order guides) that some summer tires get the 840 added and others don't. I suggest you hit the freeway and accelerate to maximum speed and report back where you topped out.

Haha, I thought about that too. Hard nope. It shall just have to remain a mystery.

It's possible that this is just the work of one local moron and not Costco as a whole.

My 2023 model year iX 50 came with summer Y-rated tires. I don't recall seeing anything about a higher speed being unlocked, and certainly nothing was mentioned verbally. I paid for the sport package and there is a line on my monroney under my tire entry that says "Specific additional content SptPk". Not sure if that references the modified exterior trim or something else.

Pretty sure this is what all Costco staff have been trained to do as I experienced the same issue 20 years ago on my first Mazda3.
If the car comes with a given speed rating on the tires from the factory, they insist on matching or exceeding it.

Once I wore out the horrible Goodyears on the car (very quickly in normal driving) I tried to get a sensible Michelin tire to replace them with and they refused citing the difference in speed rating as the Goodyears had an unusually high speed rating. I tried to assure them that I was not driving the car anywhere near those speeds (I don't think it could even hit those speeds in the first place) but and would sign a waiver if needed and they just refused.

I just bought them and had them installed at my independent garage.

They also refused to reinstall very low tread tires for a lease return (the dealer was informed that I would return it with tires that were finished). This is what made me stop trying to benefit from their free tire swap service forever. They were just too annoying to deal with, especially when if you were not buying a new set of tires, they refused to give appointments; it was first come first serve each morning...

Based on the current order guide, not all summer tires get the 840 increased top speed limiter. Maybe check your original build sheet from the dealer if you’re curious.

Is this something that can be coded? I hit vMax occasionally (in Mexico or on a track for you nannies) and would love the extra headroom, although the acceleration drops off significantly near that limit.

You got me. I tend to zone out when discussions of coding come up. I don't get it...
