Ecu Unlock Worries

Hi everybody my F40 M135i 2022 is currently getting an ecu unlock done! I’m incredibly excited however i am scared of getting general maintenance done on the car.

Before the car went in it needed the tyre pressure sensors changed and the heating wasn’t working as properly as it should have. However to me these aren’t major concerns and the car was already booked in so i will get these things fixed as soon as it comes back.

My main worry is whoever fixes the heating and the pressure sensors will this affect my ecu unlock at all? Will the garage do anything at all which can therefore then cause my ecu to re lock and cost me a lot of money and time needing to get it re locked again?

I’ve been told not to take it to bmw main dealer garages but what about a normal garage.

I heard if you spend too much time at work and with your girl and dont give your ECU enough attention, it will lock itself right back up.

You gotta just tell them dont do any programming whatsoever or touch the ECU. It involves a discussion with the shops. Hopefully not their first rodeo.

Yeh i thought that may be the case. However i’m assuming they shouldn’t even touch the ecu in this case.

Is there any situations where the ecu just locks up randomly itself? I’ve got OTA updates off but anything else which can trigger it?

It's incredibly unlikely, and not a reported issue amongst forum users. The OTA updates themselves tend to cause more issues than unlock issues to be honest just looking at the distribution of posts.

If* you ever had a major issue with the ECU, nothing would stop you from asking BMW to fix it. You could play dumb and maybe get away with a full flash overwrite by them. If your ECU is locked up they probably can't tell its tuned in the first place, so their first step would be factory reset. . .

It's a very, very low likely hood, and the inherent issue itself would probably at least give you an out with a BMW overwrite.

Worth it 10x over for the unlock.
