22kW charging via AC
Today I learned there is a 4U6 option to allow faster AC charging
https://faq.bmw.com.au/s/article/Ele...g-cable-gYFzj? Anyone has this option fitted? Do you use it often (Public AC)? |

I have it. I had it on my model S previously too.
Only used it a handful of times during ten years+ of ownership, but very happy a few times when DC charging wasn’t available and it was the only option. Not really needed here in Europe, as there is plenty of DC these days, but I got it as I have a 22kw home charger installed too… Last edited by liquidator4711; 06-07-2025 at 08:45 AM.. |

Can’t see your location but assuming US? 19.2kw is the max we can have in US due to code and grid, which is about 80a. Check with an electrician before committing as you may need to upgrade your panel.

I have it as standard equipment on my iX M60. In my 18 months of ownership i have maybe only used it a handful of times, and apart from 1 single charging session all the others were charging overnight, in which i also would have had a full charge with the normal 11 kw charger. So : it is nice to have, but would i pay for it if it was a payable option ? NO !

My Model S accepted a 20 kW 80A charge when Tesla shipped them with dual onboard chargers. It was cool to have at the time, before there were any superchargers in our state. To get to Indio, we had to stop at Chiriaco Summit in Arizona and plug into their 80A Tesla charger for a couple of hours. Those were the days!

I used one last month on a car ferry between Norway and Denmark.
Very useful to get off the ferry fully charged. 22kW was just right for the ~4 hour crossing. Other than that, only used it once previously, though this time, in Germany. |

chanders do they have 22kw charging in the Caribbean? And IIRC your car is a Japanese model, right? Was it ever an option there? We don’t have it in N. America.

We don’t even have DC chargers here but then again I can go from one end of the country to the other and back and still have 50% remaining battery SOC ![]() Last edited by chanders; 06-09-2025 at 10:28 AM.. |
