Have had the car for about a month now. In NYC we get an incentive for charging between 12:00am and 8am during the summer. Out of the 15 or so times I have charged at home only twice has the car charged in the time slot. Every time I have plugged it in it starts charging immediately. When the two times it charged in time slot it starting charging and sent me an alert it was charging and then a few seconds later it said charging was paused. Picture is today:

In this specific case, the car is overriding the time slot because it sees that it will not reach 90% (the target state of charge you have set)before your scheduled departure time of 7:30 am

The car prioritizes getting you to the set SOC or as close as possible for the set departure time and as of now, there is no way to override this behaviour in the car; you would have to set a schedule on your charger instead if you can.

Exactly as mentioned above. You can see it was predicting it would not reach your programmed 90% until after the set departure time. So, it overrides the time window in favor of making sure it has the best chance of reaching the target % by your set departure time. Also, did you note your AC limit is set to 32A? Not sure if you intended that or not.

It is normal behavior to always start charging immediately. If it calculates it can reach your target by the departure time within the set charging window, it will soon after pause charging until the programmed charging window is reached just as you described happened to you.

Got it thank you. And yes I realized after I took the screenshot that the setting was at 32a. Don’t know how that happened. I have the BMW charger. There are not settings to keep with them time slot unfortunately

You can remove your departure time and it should then only charge in that 12-8 window; the caveat being as everyone else has mentioned, you won't reach 90% by then. (Well, you won't reach 90% by 7:30am in either case, but you'll have even less charge if you wait to start til midnight.) Depends on if you're comfortable with that or not. Weather is probably not as important in NY/NJ this time of year but removing departure time preconditioning can also affect your range in the colder months I believe.

Edit: I stand corrected, you can't disable departure time.

As far as I know, you cannot set a charging window without also specifying a departure time. I wish you could, but I just tried this in the app and it was impossible.

Yes won’t let you set a charging window without departure time. It seems my only option would just be to charge more often. That way I’m closer to by 90 percent goal each time I charge.

Ah you're right. I saw the sliders to deactivate and just assumed you could turn off the departure time but I see it forces you to choose one. Really wish they'd work on updating the app a bit, it feels unnecessarily restrictive.

Agree. I prefer the Tesla functionality where you can simply set a charging window, and the car will just start charging when the window hits. The BMW setup seems like it's trying to be too smart, but it's actually inconvenient.

Yeah there's quite a few things that could be improved with the charging options IMO. Don't want to hijack this thread with all my thoughts, but also sure I'm far from alone in them.

My approach has been to set the departure time for something like five or six days in advance. So far this has constrained charge duration to the specified time slot (which is usually 23:30 - 05:30 to match electric tariff off-peak), and the car timer hasn’t been overridden in the way described in this thread.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong with setting up time slot charging. Does this work with an Emporia L2 charger or do you have to use the BMW supplied cable with the 240V adapter? I have the 50e set to 24 amps. I’m set up with PG&E for lower cost electricity between 12 and 3 AM.
Could someone please list the steps to get time slot charging to work. I have a new 50e with the latest 11/2024.74 software.

Can you explain what problems you’re having? The charger you use is irrelevant as long as the charger itself doesn’t have its own time slot settings which might conflict with the car’s settings.

I set mines up to charge the same time as you.
I had to set the Departure time for everyday of the week to 3pm (it’ll probably work if you choose 9am as well). By doing this, when I plug in the charger, it will immediately begin to charge as if bypassing my schedule. But then it stops after a minute or so and will follow the schedule. But that immediate charge throws you off. (Departure time is a must which is confusing).

And for anyone interested, seems it takes about 8 hours to charge 50% of the battery with a 50 amp circuit.

Something is off as it should definitely not take 8 hours to add 50% of charge on a 50 amp circuit which will charge the car at 40 amps.

If you charged 50% of the battery in 8 hours, your average charge rate was 6.6 kW, or 27 A.

Here’s the math…

• 52.5 kWh charged = 105 kWh battery x 50%
• 6.6 kW charge rate = 52.5 kWh / 8 hours
• 27 A charge current = 6.6 kW / 240 V

Reversing the math: A 50 A circuit could charge at 40 A max. That is a 9.6 kW charge rate. In 8 hours, you could have charged 77 kWh. That would be 73% of your battery.

See above calculations. You might want to plug in and see what kW rate you’re getting by checking the instrument panel display while you’re charging. Might also want to make sure the car is not set to limit the charging amps in iDrive.

Attaching the EV app that shows how much I charged on this particular instance. It’s the app that pays you a few pennies for charging overnight. My plug is a standard big plug without any display to show anything. And the ix is set without any charging restriction. So seems I might have to check with electrician to see why it’s not giving out the full 50amps and what if anything can even be done about it …

Are you referring to the whole display showing how much percentage I have while charging? I don’t recall seeing the kw but I’ll dig around. Thanks.
And there is no restriction set on the charging.
