I was expecting this to be a problem for me also, but strangely I’m not affected. I have a brand new iPhone 16 Pro with digital key enabled. When I switched to the new phone, I made sure to delete the old key and reactivate it through the app and cat. I deleted my wife’s key in her phone also. Once set up on my phone, I shared the digital key with her and added it to her phone’s wallet (iPhone 15 Pro). It added and worked flawlessly. I’d suggest that anyone experiencing the issue delete all digital keys from all devices and try establishing those connections. I’m also confident many people experiencing the issue have already tried that, but for anyone who hasn’t, it may solve the issue.

One thing to note is that the key visually changed in my phone’s wallet. It was previously a blue card in the apple wallet but it’s now black.

Agreed. Also, on iOS 18 and with an iPhone 16 Pro, I find that my shared key for my wife's 2024 LCI X6 works perfectly as a Digital + key when I carry the phone and wear my Apple Watch. Without the Watch, I get only Digital touch access. No idea why this might be. So, if you're having problems with a shared key, trying making certain that it's also in your Apple Watch, if you have one.

Yes, I have the watch also. I deleted the key from the watch and re-added just like I did on both phones. I’ve tried all devices separately and they all work by themselves. No problems at all, thankfully.

I tried it all again and have the same results I had before - secondary Phone digital key does not allow access with touching the car, but the secondary Apple Watch digital key is fine and works passively.

I returned these new phones, I'll keep our 15 Pros and working Digital Keys and stay off iOS 18 until they resolve this nonsense. I can't go back to carrying keys, what a pain!

Apple has a pretty generous return policy up to 14 days for any of their products.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and cannot find any reason to justify upgrading to a 16. Four generations later and Apple can't find anything new of value to add. And mine works! lol

I FINALLY got this working using a combination of suggestions from above.

When I started and things were not working the primary user's phone (my husband's phone) was an iPhone 16 Pro with iOS 18.2 and the secondary user's phone (me) was an iPhone 16 with iOs 18.

First, although we had deleted the digital keys from both the wallets it seems like they weren't fully deleted. There was some sort of confirmation needed from within the wallet app.

After that I tried to use the primary phone to get the digital key (16 Pro with 18.2) but still got the same error.

My last, successful, try was to switch the primary user to myself (the iPhone 16 with iOS 18) and then it worked and I was able to send the digital key to my husband's phone.

I see this specific fix listed in the release notes for iOS 18.1 ("fixes an issue where digital car keys may not unlock or start a vehicle with passive entry after restoring from a backup or transferring directly from another iPhone").

so I just noticed that my digital key (primary) is not working on my phone, only on watch. I always have watch on so not sure when this stopped working, but watch was just charging and went to car and it would not unlock. Using 18.1 still.

Before I do that, I checked the car. The car actually no longer things I have a primary key set! Anyone seen that before? Something really weird here.

Got Digital Key Plus working on my 16 PM and all seems to be working well. However even though I can send commands from the MyBMW app on my Watch, I no longer have Digital Key Plus active on the watch; (Ultra 2).

My understanding is that I can share the digital key from my 16 to the watch. Can someone share the steps to do so?

Fixed this: had to go to Wallet and Apple Pay on the Watch and added the Digital Key to the Watch
