And after waiting a little over 4h, I went back to the car and the SYNC was off once again, and the rear was set to 22C as before instead of my 20.5C set 4 hours before.

Is there a way to force the car to check for an update?

In the Settings option in the iDrive menu, there is a selection to force a search for an update. But, if the update is not released to your region & VIN, then it will not find anything.

But do it anyway. Once I know that the update is out, I probably search every time I am in the car and a few times a day on the app.

We'll start them off as a territory, not a full blown province.

I hope it brings your 8.5 car something useful. Over the next few days i will play around with the climate settings, setting and unsetting them in case that unsticks something in the background but from yesterday's test, essentially nothing noticeably changed for me on 8.0.

Edit: actually one thing did change, my profile was updated to fold the mirrors when I lock the car. I never set that on my cars due to ice buildup in the winter and so I have no idea why that setting was touched by the update. I turned it back off of course.

Type in update in the search bar in iDrive. One option will be update apps and services and one option will be remote software upgrade I think (that’s the one you want).

Welp. Hopefully the lock function is a thing on 8.5. But until then my neighbors can continue enjoying the tail light show any time I take out the trash or go in the guest bedroom next to the garage.

Not holding my breath on sync anytime soon.

Just shut off automatic unlock, problem solved. Either way you have to grab the handle to open the door so just set it to unlock on the door handle.

Maybe, just fundamentally, German companies are just terrible at software. BMW, VAG, M-B all get roasted for their software. Though BMW is probably the best of them, by a lot. It does make me wonder how SAP ever became a global software company... when I was leading large-scale ERP programs a while ago, SAP was by far the worst UX. When companies had to pick SAP, they did it holding their noses.

I will probably give the geofenced auto lock a try. But it is mind boggling that my only choice is to have the car locked at home. That is supremely annoying and inconvenient.

Meh, I prefer auto unlock being on. Total first world problem, but when I used to have it off, it would take the car like 5 or more seconds to do its wake up sequence while I sit outside the door waiting. Not a big deal that it auto unlocks at home, I just don't need it to since it's in the garage.

If the car would unlock instantaneously every time as my hand began passing through the door cutout, then that would be different. Suppose I'm just used to "keyless entry" being instant when your hand touches the handle. (Which, it does - just not all the time)

ALL ERP systems have horrible UI/UXs. You're supposed to hate your ERP system. That's just the way things are.

Got prompted for the OTA yesterday evening (in wonderful Canada) - got the "Exclude HOME" option FINALLY!!
Works great! - no more unlock...lock...unlock...[repeat] hile working in my downstairs office which is just close enough to trigger it.
- walk away locks
- approach does not welcome/unlock
- opening any handle or trunk unlocks
Good stuff.

If you can check to see if your sync setting sticks between drives, that would be great... In case they fixed it for 8.5 cars but not old 8.0 cars like mine.

Got this yesterday in Canada (2025 xDrive50) and installed without problems.

Was really looking forward to "Efficient as Start Mode" but can't figure out how to enable this? Setting Efficient mode and going into "Settings" for it, there's no toggle for "Start Mode". It also doesn't get remembered between drives. Am I holding it wrong?

Also noticed the climate "Sync" issue is not fixed.

Starting in efficient mode was noted as not being available for US markets. Maybe Canada is excluded also?

Previously discussed some time ago in another thread, but I seem to recall a reference (at least in the US) to some section in the CFR that would prohibit starting the car in Efficient Mode. Makes sense why it's excluded, and very much unlikely to change absent some crusading Congressperson taking it on.

It is. Just look at the full 03/2025 release notes document I posted earlier - https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...2&d=1741108328

It’s pretty much instant every time I touch the handle. Very very rare does it delay. The annoyance of the car unlocking every time I walked by made it worthless IMO
