Honestly, this is not that terrible with a little context... The engine on my last BMW died out of warranty. Replacement cost was around $20K for a rebuilt engine, and that was around 15 years ago. I did not repair it, sold the car as-is, and took an extended break from the BMW brand.

That’s not to say that an owner couldn’t experience a bad cell or two over the ownership experience, but since the battery is warrantied for 8 years and most ‘electronic’ items would seem to fail much sooner than that in their use cycle, I’m not worried about the battery in my iX in the least tbh. |

Warranty is 8Y or 100,000 miles. This average out at 12,500 miles per year. I currently do 20k miles a year, meaning the battery warranty is for 5Y. The other electric car maker, it is 8Y or 120k miles.

This is an interesting video on the replacement or repairs costs of some typical ev’s and hybrids. It looks like there companies out there that can repair the batteries without replacing the whole thing.
I presume these guys have to be certified to do the work much like an electrician, otherwise 💩 |

Unlike Tesla, BMW's batteries consist of dealer serviceable modules that can be changed out as needed. In a Tesla you have no option but to replace the entire pack if even one cell or capacitor goes bad. There are only a few places in the country that have the capability to repair a Tesla pack on a micro level, and even then, they usually just isolate the bad cell/module and disconnect it from the rest of the pack instead of replacing it.
The above applies to Tesla's "old" packs. When it comes to the new structural packs, forget it. The entire bottom of the car has to be cut out and the interior removed. Tesla is moving toward a disposable car model where the battery is essentially sealed and inaccessible. Like an iPhone. I much prefer BMW's approach that reduces the need for pack replacement. |

What is bothersome to me about BMW's warranty is that the motors/drive units are not warranted beyond the standard 4Y/50k mile model. Having an 8Y/Unlimited mile warranty for both the high voltage battery *and* the motors would inspire confidence.

What’s the saying… ‘never own a BMW out of warranty’?

BMW's decision to use brushes in the iX motors is a little concern to me. Did they use similar motors with brushes in the i3 and i8? We do not have enough years yet on the iX to know if that will be a problem out of warranty.

Good question - those brushes are supposed to be replaceable, but who knows how big ($$) a job that would be.

BMW has had issues with brushes in earlier models. Most of those have come in already and been replace. Also there was recalls for drive units etc. Replacing a brush module really isn’t that much time and parts.

Just noticed you're in Orange County. Where should I be taking my iX for service in OC?

This brush module was contaminated by a leaking oil seal, which is not common for brush module issues. Mostly it’s a chip in the brush module causing insulation fault. Improved part has already been input for production as of like 22 or early 23 or something.

Every dealer has certified high voltage technicians to work on your vehicle in the area.

No. The drive unit must be removed.
