So there you go. Thank you for the clarification. If it were actually a major loophole it would have been reported everywhere

Bummer, and thanks for the follow-up.

No need; I have a perfect Plan B. My daughter has a Chevrolet Bolt, and GM wants $225 for the adapters. Word is that GM is issuing the Lectron-made adapters to Chevrolet owners and Tesla-made adapters to Cadillac owners.

Works out good then! I’m shocked GM, didn’t do the free thing like Ford

Right. GM is a bucket of idiots. If I were a GM BEV owner, I would be pissed. The Lectron adapter is $180, and they are pricing them at $225 to Chevy owners.

Yep it’s pretty pathetic on their part! I thought it was a nice gesture from ford and Rivian to reward their customers for their loyalty. God forbid GM do the same

Are you concerned that GM has stated that anyone not using the GM branded adapter will void the battery warranty should anything happen?

Knowing GM, even though I agree with you that the Lectron adapter could only potentially damage the charging port itself, it WILL refuse warranty coverage because it can save money that way.

Nope. GM is a bucket of morons. And there's this pesky little thing called "The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act."

I was at a location today that was showing up in the T* app as being open to 3rd party (GM, Ford, Rivian) manufacturers and tried using a Lectron Vortex plug with my 2023 but no love. Plugged in and I received the "Your vehicle is not able to charge at superchargers at this time" message.

Argh. Too bad!! Looks like they are indeed whitelisting VINs. Thanks for testing!

I’m well aware of the MM act, but do you really think it’s worth fighting a mega corporation with lawyers on retainer over saving $40?

I’m pretty confident that kind of fear is a nothing burger. GM is selling the Lectron adapters to their customers.

I didn’t buy it to save money. I got it to have it early so I can tinker.

Absolutely there is network security. Tesla knows the VIN number of whatever car is charging, make, model, etc. upon plugging-in. If the vehicle is not authenticated to charge on the network, it cannot charge regardless of what you're doing with the app. A simple analogy would be a router that only allows computers with certain MAC addresses to use the network. Same concept.

EA also knows your VIN, make and model simply by plugging in. When I had trouble once and gave them the stall number, they asked if the BMW iX was my car. I had not done anything with the app and was intending to use the NFC reader. They rebooted the stall and compared my charge rate with the average charge curve for the iX and said it was now working. I received a complimentary session.

I know... I was leading with the comedic reply.

I deleted my email from Mary Barra where she told me GM is sourcing from Tesla and Lectron.

On the semi-serious side, I have been following this for a while across multiple forums. The hard information is only about 48 hours old when people started receiving their adapters. The info is spread through dozens of posts and GM training guides that show the Lectron adapter. I got the sense that you are unlikely to buy one regardless, so I did not feel like searching through all those threads and posts to find the information you seek. If you are curious, go to a Chevy dealer and ask their parts department to show you an adapter.

The Tesla-made Adapter is part number 85090442, and the Lectron-made adapter is 85806539.

Yeah only the tesla made adapter for me. God knows when I will even need one at this rate BMW will be lucky to be on the network in 2026.

I hope this happens in the not to distant future. Having SC access on the Rivian has really been great. The iX is a notably better road tripper and this will be a welcome addition.
