Edit: I found this at ScrapeHero-dot-com: (...it's accuracy is at the mercy of its employees and the internet!)

Top 10 States and Territories with the most BMW dealerships:
State / Territory Number of dealerships Population Population per dealership
California 51 (14%) 39.51M 774.75K
Florida 29 (8%) 21.48M 740.62K
Texas 27 (7%) 29.00M 1.07M
New York 22 (6%) 19.45M 884.27K
Pennsylvania 20 (5%) 12.80M 640.10K
New Jersey 18 (5%) 8.88M 493.44K
Illinois 16 (4%) 12.67M 792.00K
Ohio 13 (4%) 11.69M 899.15K
Georgia 11 (3%) 10.62M 965.18K
Virginia 10 (3%) 8.54M 853.60K
Your search indicates that my guess at the number of stores in California was spot on.

My experience at Knauz ordering an individual paint G80 M3 was 10/10 Matt Pudlo is very knowledgeable, finance dept one of the best. Only had one service (break in service) and the service experience was great as well.

NJ in the house!
Funny I reached out to every one of them in NJ and they either wanted to upcharge me for my M3 order or didn't have an allocation. Congrats on the award tho... 😆

When I ordered my car from Allentown, they had 1 allocation at the time. I must have gone at just the right time or I would be waiting a while for my car.

I recently started a YT channel (Drives with a Dobie - https://www.youtube.com/@DriveswithaDobie) and this actually helps me decide which dealership to create a relationship with. I'm in the NYC area but too bad none are in the 5 boroughs. But I'm in NJ all the time so at least there are some there.

Agreed especially Freeport which has the worst prices in the world. I service sometimes in Bayshore but I always go Paul Miller to be honest for cars some 10 years ago when I got my first Beamer at 25.

This is 100% true! I lived 10 minutes from Sewell BMW of Grapevine in Texas for 10 years. It was by far the BEST dealership in terms of customer service—every single department was top notch.

I recently moved back to New England and our dealership here is mediocre at best—yet they are listed on this top 32 list as a winner too! WTF?!? How are they measuring this because I can definitively say it is flawed if this other dealer is included in the same list as Sewell.

It’s funny too as this other dealership _thinks_ they are so good and brags about being one of the best. They are amateurs. I constantly say to myself that they have no idea what good customer service is like and need to send people down to Sewell in Grapevine to experience truly 1st class service.

I fear I’ll never again experience the service we had in Texas. I guess I was spoiled and thought all BMW dealerships were going to be like that. Boy, I was mistaken.

No surprise my local one (Nashville) isn’t on the list. Many of ones I’ve dealt with are on the list including my current one. (Reading PA)

I was thinking maybe 70 BMW dealerships in California...Not counting the Location in Oakland that rebuilds them after arrival from a Ship!

I just purchased my 4th from them and they have serviced my last 9. It started out of convenience and now it’s my only. Tried Gwinnett and Global, neither compare.

Sewell Grapevine…. Absolutely fantastic experiences. Equal to, if not better than Porsche experiences.

Don't confuse this award with having anything to do with actual customer service or expertise.

The main components in tallying this award are compliance with dealer facility updates, decor purchases from BMW vendors, reaching sales and service quotas, and how well the dealer pays for perfect customer surveys. Give me the old shop owned by the concerned proprietor who is actually in the dealership over the entitled second-generation who has amassed a conglomerate by buying up small stores. Hedge funds, venture capitalists, and the rest don't create dealerships like we had 50-years ago when BMW NA took over here. And BMW NA will regale you with stories of how far they have come despite having to contend with the poor-performing Mom&Pop shops that Hoffman left them, but the reality is the enthusiast customer base that those shops created with literally no help from BMW Corporate is still the basis for BMW's appeal and reputation today. Screw the guy leasing an electric behemoth that will be on the junk-pile of history in less than a decade. What do you think of when you think of a great dealership? Their Latte bar? The quality of the furniture in their customer lounge? How many videos they send you when you simply asked for a state inspection? Or is it maybe how well they stand by The Golden Rule and just simply treat you the way you'd want to be treated?

Yeah, I thought so. Which is why, after nearly 50-years affiliated with the local BMW dealers treating my customers the way I wanted to be treated, I am now retired. And just enjoying my BMWs.

You spelled out what I decided not to spell out, but you are spot on. The COE award is largely based on dealers following BMW’s metrics to the letter of the law and getting/begging for perfect survey scores from everyone. Doing all of this stuff has no correlation to the customer experience at the store which explains why many on the COE list are disliked by many enthusiasts. My salesman and friend is the top selling M salesman in the nation for the last 2 years, but his store will never get a COE because they won’t put following BMW’s metrics to the letter their sole objective. Guess what, that store is very well regarded in its region and much better regarded than its direct competitor who is on this COE list.
